Springs Rescue Mission

Springs Rescue Mission (SRM) will host its sixth annual "Back to School Event" for underprivileged children on Saturday, August 8, 2009 on its campus located at 5 W. Las Vegas St. from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

"ABC... easy as 123...” sung to the famous melody made popular by Michael Jackson many years ago is relevant today in a different way.  Except, the recent resurgence in popularity of the iconic figure saturating the news has overshadowed a continuing growing concern in our community – children in need.

The decline of household incomes due to severe cuts in pay and even job losses has affected the smallest of needs that make a big difference in the future lives of children throughout our city.  With August right around the corner and children heading back to school soon, poverty-stricken families are struggling to equip their children with the proper tools to head into a new year of learning.

Springs Rescue Mission is asking the community to help make the “ABC's as easy as 123” for area children by donating school supplies for their annual Back to School Event. “SRM staff and volunteers are praying that we will be prepared to meet the needs of over 600 children. This goal can only be met with everyone’s love, help and support,” says Lyn Harwell, Director of Programs.

The event will feature a festive day of fun-filled activities to give these Colorado Springs children a celebration and many smiles as they prepare for another school year.  Backpacks filled with age- appropriate supplies will be provided free of charge at the event. The day will also include bike give-aways, face painting, snow cones and popcorn, and a BBQ, along with clothing and other vital necessities all free of charge.

Please deliver any of the following urgently needed items to the Mission's donations receiving location at 1 West Las Vegas Street – crayons, white glue, glue sticks, erasers, supply boxes, calculators, wide & college ruled spiral notebooks, wide & college ruled filler paper, pocket folders, fat markers, Kleenex, yellow #2 pencils, red & blue pens, blunt tip scissors, watercolors, colored Pencils, hand sanitizer, 3-ring binders, rulers, pencil pouch, pencil sharpeners. Backpacks are needed in large quantity.

For families needing assistance, the deadline to sign up to receive supplies is Aug. 7, 2009 and parents must call 314-2356 to register to receive backpacks for their kids.

“There are so many kids in need right now – we all have to be part of the solution so we can help as many children in our city as possible. The demand is great and we are asking the community to join us in a big way for a great cause,” Mr. Harwell encourages.

State Games of America

Powerhouse rock star Carly Smithson will be the featured entertainer for thousands of athletes and fans at the Opening Ceremony of the 2009 State Games of America on July 30 at the Colorado Springs World Arena.

The Irish-born singer, who captivated millions during her appearances on American Idol in season seven, has just announced that she has joined an exciting new band, We Are The Fallen, as its lead singer, with three of the four original members of Evanescence, guitarists Ben Moody and John LeCompt, and drummer Rocky Gray, as well as bassist Marty O’Brian.

The popular performer, familiar to millions of worldwide fans, lists her musical influences as Heart, Celine Dion, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ray Charles, Whitney Houston, The Rolling Stones, U2, Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash, and Annie Lennox.

Now living in San Diego, the Irish girl with a voice that packs a powerful punch began cultivating her rich, soulful style from the time she was a child. After moving to the USA as a teenager to pursue a career in music, she scored a record deal and released an album under her maiden name, Carly Hennessy, which never managed to gain mainstream acceptance.

Undeterred, Smithson continued to sing and eventually tried out for American Idol, season five. The judges gave her a unanimous pass to continue on to Hollywood, but when troubles arose with her visa, Smithson was forced to drop out of the competition. Smithson's issues with the Department of Immigration were eventually resolved, and she returned again to audition for American Idol's seventh season.

This time when she made it through to Hollywood, she was able to continue her winning streak, beating out the competition to earn a spot in the show's top 6, but was voted out in a controversial decision by fans. Since Idol, Carly has been busily writing songs and was recently named the lead singer for We Are The Fallen..

“This will be something special for the athletes and the fans,” said Colorado Springs Sports Corporation President/CEO Tom Osborne. “Carly Smithson is one of America’s most popular performers, recognized by millions of young fans everywhere.”

“We are grateful to our Opening Ceremony sponsor, AT&T, for its support and huge role in helping us bring Carly Smithson to the event,” said Osborne.

“We are thrilled to support the State Games of America, the thousands of athletes who are coming to Colorado Springs, and most of all, to be able to help bring Carly Smithson to the World Arena,” said AT&T Rocky Mountain region vice president and general manager Jace Barbin. “This outstanding performer will provide a great start to the Opening Ceremony, and we are proud to be able to support it.”

The Opening Ceremony of the Games gets underway at the Colorado Springs World Arena at 7:00 on July 30.  Olympic freestyle wrestling gold medalist Henry Cejudo will cap off a torch run that begins that afternoon at the U.S. Olympic Training Center when he lights the Games official flame at the arena. The evening program includes the Olympic-style Parade Of The States with their athletes, a salute to the Armed Forces, exhibitions by the gymnasts of the Colorado Aerials, a performance by the Southern Colorado popular band, “Nocturnal Tomatoes,” a Pyro show, and an appearance by Colorado Governor Bill Ritter.

Michael Jackson

Immediately following the announcement of Michael Jackson’s death, individuals began selling memorabilia online. Not surprisingly, the quantity of Don’t Get the Slip When Buying Memorabilia of “The Gloved One”

goods offered on eBay increased dramatically the morning after Jackson’s death.

Your Better Business Bureau is advising that the value of most memorabilia and commemorative items is sentimental. The currently inflated prices will drop over time. Already, memorabilia and commemorative items, including t-shirts, special edition newspapers and magazines, autographs, gloves, posters, newspapers and more, are being mass produced and sold to fans. Because the value of collectibles is largely dependent on their rarity, these mass-produced items are unlikely to appreciate in value.

For those looking to purchase items to help remember the King of Pop, your BBB has the following suggestions:

Get educated

Collectors should research the value of all before they make a purchase.

Confirm authenticity

Confirming the authenticity of memorabilia is not easy. Autographs can be verified by a third party, but for other items, the collector should ask the seller questions such as how the seller came to own it. If the seller can’t answer simple questions, the collector should walk away.

Make purchases with a credit card

Purchase items with a credit card. If the seller’s merchandise turns out to be fraudulent, the consumer can dispute the charge with the credit card company and may be eligible for reimbursement.

Purchase items from a reputable seller

When shopping online stores, collectors should look for the BBB seal on Web sites and click on the seal to confirm the company’s legitimacy. If there isn’t a BBB seal on the site, shoppers can check out the potential seller at www.bbb.org.

Also when purchasing items from an individual on eBay, research the seller’s track record by reading buyer reviews. When shopping on Craigslist, go local and never wire money as payment.

Don’t be fooled by empty advertising claims

Just because the seller claims that an item is of limited edition, it doesn’t mean there weren’t millions made. If the item is being widely advertised, chances are, it’s too common to actually gain much value over the years.

Go to www.bbb.org for more advice on shopping safely.

Start With Trust

Springs Rescue Mission

Springs Rescue Mission urgently needs volunteers to strengthen its services and outreach efforts to those who are struggling in Colorado Springs.

Amid an ailing economy, the focus of attention instinctively corresponds with the mounting needs that accumulate daily as more people find themselves combating unemployment and struggling to make ends meet.  Hoping for some kind of relief, many turn to local agencies offering services to those facing poverty.

Often overlooked as a focal point is the increasing need of volunteers these organizations need to keep cost low, services functioning and tangible help being provided to those who are fighting to survive.

Springs Rescue Mission is one such agency currently laboring against this quandary in its attempt to fill vital volunteer positions.  Through the Mission and its services, volunteers effectively make a difference in the lives of families with children battling poverty, as well as those who are hungry and homeless right here in Colorado Springs.

Volunteer Coordinator, Eleanor Vazquez,  surveys the need, “It’s kind of disappointing as I look at the continued growth of people who need help and at the same time realizing we need people who are willing to give of their time and assist the Mission as it provides for many who need our support.  In reality, we are also reaching out to the part of our community who can personally give of themselves by offering their gift of time to serve those in need.”

Volunteer opportunities where the Mission currently needs support and partnership include:

·         Licensed Volunteer Drivers :  Hours range from 7 am to 3 pm Monday – Saturday.   Positions include:  Food donation pickups, deliveries, addiction recovery resident appointments, furniture donations (using SRM vehicles).

·         Direct Services Department Volunteers:  Helps provides emergency assistance to families with children and single parents.  Positions include: Intake of donations, warehouse assistance, and licensed drivers.

·         Samaritan’s Kitchen:  Helps provide food for hungry children, families and individuals in Colorado Springs.  Positions include:  Packing lunch boxes for children, prep cooks and drivers.

·         Administrative Assistant:  Supports a variety of programs and services within the Mission. Positions include:  Data entry (requires computer knowledge), answer phones, and various special event projects.

These positions are vital in supporting the services Springs Rescue Mission provides on a continual basis to the segment of our community who are recently unemployed or are working but still earn a sub-standard income due to the economy.

“We want to work together with gracious people who can offer their time.  Springs Rescue Mission offers tremendous opportunities to utilize their talents to provide resources to those who need it the most.  For many facing financial difficulty, we may be the only place they can come for the hope of survival through help that is free of charge.  Volunteers make this possible,” says CEO Joe Vazquez certifying the need.

To learn more about Springs Rescue Mission and how you can help, call the Volunteer Coordinator at 314-2314 or visit their website at www.mysrm.org.

The Space Foundation is now seeking nominations for induction into the prestigious Space Technology Hall of Fame® in 2010. The program honors innovations by organizations and individuals who transform space technology into commercial products that improve life on Earth. Nomination information, including online and downloadable nomination forms, is available on www.SpaceTechHallofFame.org.

The deadline is August 10 and anyone can submit a nomination of a technology that was developed for space and then modified or adopted for use on Earth.

The Space Foundation, in cooperation with NASA, established the Space Technology Hall of Fame in 1988 to increase public awareness of the benefits that result from space exploration programs and to encourage further innovation. Since that time, 61 technologies have been inducted.

Inducted technologies include energy-saving technologies, life-saving medical devices, health improvement technologies, satellite and telecommunication technologies, and practical commercial devices. Some noteworthy examples are the automatic external defibrillator; non-invasive breast biopsy technology; MRI and CAT scan imaging; anti-shock garments; LASIK eye surgery; implantable pacemakers and hearing aids; and technologies that power cellular phones, terrestrial networks, and satellite broadcast television and radio communications. The 2009 inductees were a life-saving food supplement derived from algae and space shuttle-based aerodynamic vehicle design that has revolutionized large trucks.

Each nomination is reviewed for completeness, assessed by technical experts, and then ranked by a prestigious panel of judges who look at economic benefit, public awareness, societal benefit, longevity, and public/private/partnership investment.

Award ceremonies for the 2010 inductees and honorees will be part of the 26th National Space Symposium, which will be held at The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colo., April 12 - 15, 2010. Conducted by the Space Foundation, the symposium is the premier annual gathering of the global space community.

Additional information about the Space Technology Hall of Fame, including a complete list of inducted technologies, is available at
www.SpaceTechHallofFame.org.

11th Annual Art on the Streets

Thirteen works of art from a record 62 submissions will be officially introduced as the 11th annual Art on the Streets exhibit at an opening reception on June 26th. Works in this year's show represent the creative labor of artists from Colorado, Kansas, California, Arizona, New Mexico and Italy.

Program Juror, Jan Schall, Sanders Sosland Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, MO, will announce all of the selections and the top three winners of a $30,000 prize pool at the opening reception on June 26.  Dr. Schall holds a doctorate in art history from the University of Texas at Austin and a master's degree in art history from Washington University in St. Louis.

"There's no doubt in my mind this is going to be our best show ever," said Denise Schall, staff coordinator for the project. "There is some really fun stuff, including work from some past favorite artists!"

We don't want to give away the store but... Look for an intriguing oversized interpretation at the Plaza of the Rockies by one perennially favorite "native son." Discover a new dose of kinetic whimsy in Acacia Park, too.

After June 25, an Art on the Streets walking tour map and program brochure can be downloaded at www.downtown80903.com
.

Art on the Streets (AOTS) is presented by U.S. Bank, Nor'wood Development Group, and G.E. Johnson in concert with Downtown Partnership of Colorado Springs and its affiliate, Community Ventures, Inc. 61st RIDE FOR THE PIKES PEAK RANGE RIDERS

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – June 8, 2009The Pikes Peak Range Riders will ride again this year in support of the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo following the Colorado Springs Street Breakfast on June 24th.  This is the 61st year that the Range Riders have ridden around the Pikes Peak region.  The Range Riders were established in 1949 by Everett Conover and Kenneth Brookhart; the organization has grown to over 160 members.

George Hess III, president of the Pikes Peak Range Riders states that “the primary mission of this organization, with its founding in 1949, was to support and promote the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo and to preserve our western heritage.  Our mission has been expanded to read: “To promote the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo and the western heritage of the region while supporting our community through our Foundation, now known as “Latigo”; we work year round to accomplish this mission.  Many of the members of the organization are actively and directly involved in our community and the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo; from selling tickets to serving as President of the Board of Directors of the rodeo.  Proceeds from the rodeo go to help our local military families through various charities affiliated with our armed forces and it is an honor for us to be both Range Riders and to support this great cause this rodeo represents.”

Other programs supported by the Range Riders include:

  • Latigo Trails Heritage Centre was donated by Range Rider members to the Pikes Peak Range Rider Foundation.  Many organizations utilize the Centre including the Pikes Peak Therapeutic Riding Center, 4-H clubs, Pikes Peak and Black Forest Little Britches and the Colorado High School Rodeo Association.

  • The Range Riders honor and recognize an outstanding member of the community with the Silver Spur Award.  Past award winners include Bob Norris, the Colorado Springs Military and Mary Ellen McNally.

  • The Pivots, a 16-member riding team, started in 1954, kicks-off the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo every night with their unique horseback drill.  They also appear at many events throughout the west including the National Western Stock Show Rodeo.

  • The Pikes Peak Rangerettes was started in 1957 and a scholarship was established for this all-girl precision equestrian drill team who act as good-will ambassadors for the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo.

  • The Range Rider Foundation funds the Margaret Brookhart Memorial Scholarship Fund which is awarded to graduating seniors with a 3.0 GPA and interest in the American West.  This scholarship is dedicated to relatives of current or past Pikes Peak Range Riders.

Springs Rescue Mission (SRM) will host its second annual “Summer Extravaganza” for the less fortunate on Saturday, June 27, 2009. The event starts at 9 am and will be held on the SRM campus located at 5 West Las Vegas Street.

With unemployment at its highest in decades, rising gas and food costs still causing an imbalance in many lives, already struggling poor and needy families in Colorado Springs need help. Springs Rescue Mission is planning to make a difference by providing free clothing, furniture, household goods, and other basic necessities to over 1,000 families and individuals who would benefit from the extra help.

“We are inviting families, individuals, and the working poor from some of the most vulnerable neighborhoods in Colorado Springs. Our goal is to assist those who are financially struggling by providing basic necessities most can’t afford after paying the rent,” says Chief Executive Officer Rev. Joe Vazquez.

Vazquez also adds, “It’s really stressful today, especially for the working poor. It can get depressing. So we are also creating a day of celebration – A Family Outreach Day – by welcoming in summer with a fun and lively event. We’ll have games for the kids, a free BBQ, live music and other fun activities. We want to create a positive experience”.
